Boxing Live: In the “perfect fight” in Bournemouth, Chris Billam-Smith believes he would want to strike Lawrence Okolie frequently as he attempts to win the WBO cruiserweight championship from his old training partner.
When the Vitality Stadium hosts the all-English match on Saturday, May 27, Billam-Smith will be on the pitch in his hometown.
Previously working with Billam-Smith at Shane McGuigan’s gym, the undefeated Okolie is currently working for SugarHill Steward.
“It’s the ideal battle,” according to Billam-Smith, who spoke to Sky Sports News. I’ve always wanted to win a world championship at the Vitality, and this is the ideal chance to do so against somebody I know very well. We’ve probably completed 300 rounds in total.
“I’m thrilled. I believe it to be a fantastic match for the sport. Once it was presented, it didn’t take long to make; it was probably signed within a week.
“To be the world champion is every fighter’s goal, and to achieve it at the level I am, with this chance, is a dream come true. My responsibility is to realise my ambition. Everyone else has contributed in some way.”
“I am anticipating a good Lawrence.”
Billam-Smith last fought in December 2022, knocking out Armend Xhoxhaj in the fifth round. On the other hand, Okolie last boxed in March, defeating New Zealander David Light to retain his cruiserweight belt in his first contest in over a year.
Billam-Smith believes Okolie would benefit from consecutive training camps, but he can succeed if he can consistently hit his former stablemate.
“I can’t give too much away, but the task for anyone is landing on Lawrence,” the 32-year-old remarked. “You only need to strike him because once you land on him, he’s fantastic at tying you up. Hit him a lot.”
“Nobody actually has done that. perhaps shot him a few times here and there. That is the strategy to hit him hard and frequently.
“He and I have sparred more lately than we have, but before that, we had a break. He hasn’t had a break between camps, which is definitely to his advantage, so I anticipate seeing a better Lawrence. He has cleaned off the ring rust and set up tent in the second camp.”
