WBC Heavyweight Belt: Tyson Fury, the 2023 heavyweight champion, has not yet competed. After negotiations to fight Oleksandr Usyk fell down earlier this year, he has yet to even select an opponent or establish a date for the fight.
Even longer since Usyk hasn’t been active. Since defeating Anthony Joshua in their rematch in August, the Ukrainian has not engaged in boxing.
The WBC president, Mauricio Sulaiman, has bemoaned the state of the heavyweight division and anticipates that the organisation will soon designate a mandatory opponent for Tyson Fury.
Sulaiman told Sky Sports, “We need to do something. There are several choices. Since June is already here and there is no scenario, I will discuss this with the board of governors. Tyson Fury will uphold our honour and reveal the WBC champion.”
Deontay Wilder was required to fight Andy Ruiz in a final eliminator to decide the mandatory challenger for the WBC’s heavyweight championship. But neither of those fights have taken place.
Sulaiman stated, “That has been announced since November. “We’ve been attempting to do that carefully. In the hopes that Fury would face Usyk, we decided not to push it. Thus, it took until March for the Fury-Usyk discussions to break down. Therefore, we must make some choices.”
The WBC has Anthony Joshua in its top rankings. He might be considered Fury’s required championship challenger.
“There’s a chance. Joshua is immediately adjacent at No. 3 if Wilder and Ruiz are not engaged in a last-elimination battle. That’s conceivable,” Sulaiman said.
“I don’t want to speculate because trying to make anything up would be reckless. We must follow a procedure. That choice will be made by the board of governors of the WBC.
“Anything is conceivable at this point. Too much skill, too many amazing matches, and too many brilliant lineups might be created for heavyweight, yet nothing is happening.”
Making the biggest matches has been a persistent issue for the sport, particularly in the heavyweight class. Sulaiman remains optimistic despite this, though.
“Naturally, the underperformance of heavyweights in the previous contests raises concerns. However, that is all the fault of power and greed. So perhaps they’ll realise their mistake and start fighting. Tyson Fury is a victim of the dangers of money,” according to Sulaiman.
“But he’s eager to fight anyone, and I have no doubt that he’ll start acting shortly.”
