Boxing Live: The WBA International welterweight champion, Cyrus Pattinson, who is 28 years old, defeated Chris Jenkins in the ninth round at Newcastle Arena after never having advanced past the sixth round in his professional career.
In only his sixth professional fight, Cyrus Pattinson defeated former British and Commonwealth champion Chris Jenkins in the ninth round at Newcastle Arena to claim the WBA International welterweight title.
The 28-year-old, who had never advanced past the sixth round before, won an action-packed fight, taking control from the seventh round on.
The seasoned Jenkins, who held the titles of British and Commonwealth champion from 2019 to 2021, fought valiantly throughout, but Pattinson’s onslaught in the ninth round finally convinced his corner to concede defeat.
After going pro, Pattinson has won all six of his fights. He said: “It’s really a dream. I’ve imagined coming out here and hearing everyone shout dozens and thousands of times.
“I was aware that it would be difficult when Chris Jenkins was chosen as the opponent. Chris deserves praise; he’s a real champion.
“I had to endure because it was back and forth and I couldn’t stop. I guess the sixth or seventh was when the tide started to turn; at that point, I think I stepped on the gas a little bit, but I don’t think I stopped.
“I had no sense of the pressure. Despite the difficulty of the battle, I found it to be entertaining.”
Pat McCormack, an Olympic silver medalist, defeated Italian opponent Dario Socci in the eighth and final round of their fight on the same card to earn his fourth professional victory.
Solomon Dacres defeated Robert Ismay in two rounds to win the English heavyweight championship. Meanwhile, talented local prospects Mark Dickinson and Calum French defeated Ben Ridings and Jordan Ellison on points in eight rounds each.
