Boxing Match: Adam Azim stopped Anthony Loffet in 66 seconds to win the WBC Youth Inter-Continental super-lightweight title.
Azim was only in his fifth professional fight when he entered his first scheduled 10-rounder against Loffet, but he didn’t even need half a round to finish off his Belgian opponent.
He pounced on Loffet and dropped him in under a minute. He displayed his right hand before unleashing a devastating left uppercut. That stung Loffet. Azim noticed and stepped in with two more right hooks to knock Loffet out.
Those had struck with venom. Loffet rose only uncomfortably.
Azim resumed his attack with lightning speed. He blasted Loffet with right hooks, shaking and injuring him.
When the referee saw the towel flying in from Loffet’s corner, he stopped the fight, saving Loffet from an unavoidable, brutal finish.
Azim’s celebration was almost as impressive. He cartwheeled across the ring before performing his now-famous backflip.
“This is the first of many,” the 20-year-old from Slough said afterwards. “If anyone gives me the first shot and I land it straight away, you’re getting hurt straightaway.
“I want so many other titles, I’m going to grab them with both hands.”
Azim’s promoter Ben-Shalom declared, “He is the future of British boxing.”
Local hero Dylan Cheema had an unexpectedly tough four-rounder with Stu “Little Canelo” Greener on the undercard. The latter caught him and knocked a round off Coventry’s popular Cheema, the winner of a recent BOXXER Series tournament, but Cheema won 39-37.
Cheema is still an opponent who’s caught Azim’s eye. “I love that fight,” Azim said. “If Cheema wants it, he can have it.”
Karriss Artingstall, a Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist, made her professional debut at this BOXXER Breakthrough event. Artingstall’s performance against veteran Vaida Masiokaite was assured, as she brought her power punches to bear and won on points in six rounds.
