Boxing Match: Josh Taylor said he was ‘devastated’ after losing his world title, but Teofimo Lopez said he was thinking about retiring after beating the Scotsman on points in New York.
Taylor’s world title reign and unblemished record came to an end early Sunday morning when Lopez won a unanimous decision at Madison Square Garden.
He was extremely upset with his performance, which resulted in his first loss in 20 fights, but his requests for a rematch are unlikely to be approved by Lopez, who has stated that he wants to retire from the sport for a while.
“The last two rounds are championship rounds, and I’ve never done enough, so it is what it is,” Taylor said to Sky Sports.
“On the night, the better man won; I wasn’t the best, far from it.
“It is what it is, I am devastated, but we will return.” He’s the winner, and I’d want to do it again. I know I can win and defeat him, but he was the superior guy tonight, so I have no excuses.
“I’d love to fight him again, and why not fight him back home?” However, the ball is in his court; he is the champion.
“I’d love to do it again, but I’m probably going to move up to welterweight now.” I’ve been saying it for a long time, and the jump to welterweight is on the horizon, so I could do 140 again, but I’d feel more comfortable at 147.”
Lopez won a world title in the second division after his career was halted in November 2021 by a shocking loss against George Kambosos Jr.
However, the Brooklyn native has raised new concerns about his future. “What’s next?” Lopez told Sky Sports. Perhaps retirement. I believe I need to take a break. I sincerely wish to assist children in the boxing industry. But we’ll consider it.
“I’ve done a lot in my sport, and I don’t get enough love from my end.”
“You know, I guess that’s what happens when you’re amazing and everyone despises you. But there’s too much on my family, too much on individuals I care about, and these are the things I considered.
“That’s why I came out here and gave it my all tonight.”
