Boxing News: According to Top Rank CEO Todd DuBoef, Vasiliy Lomachenko has approached George Kambosos Jr. to arrange a bout to determine the lightweight division’s No. 1.
Lomachenko dominated Richard Commey to the point where he refused to go for the knockout and instead motioned for his opponent’s trainer to withdraw their man from the fight.
He’d lost three world titles to Teofimo Lopez, who had them stolen from him in his first defence by Kambosos Jr.
“Lomachenko has made it very clear to us, and to his team, that this is the fight he wants,” Top Rank promoter DuBoef said of chasing Kambosos Jnr.
“We’re attempting to work out an agreement with them for a fight in the first part of next year.”
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum had stated to Sky Sports that “I believe it will happen” and that Lomachenko will fly to Kambosos Jnr’s native Australia.
“I am hopeful that by the end of [2022], Loma will be back fighting for titles,” Arum added.
Dean Lonergan, an Australian promoter who worked with Top Rank to put Manny Pacquiao vs. Jeff Horn on the card in Brisbane, said: “The most important thing for George to accomplish if he wants to become a household brand in Australia is to defend these titles against a major name and win. Australians will adore him if he continues to win.”
Lomachenko, a three-weight world champion from Ukraine, was regarded as one of the best fighters in the world before his shock loss to Lopez.
He’s subsequently bounced back with two great victories.
Lomachenko, who is 33 years old and competes in a division with younger opponents such as Kambosos Jr., Lopez, Devin Haney, Gervonta Davis, and Ryan Garcia, has shown no signs of slowing down.
“Lomachenko is a poster boy for a lot of things in boxing,” DuBoef added. “He was aggressively matched – he came straight out of the amateurs and [in his second bout] competed for a world title.”
“He doesn’t see a setback as a decrease in his worth. He sees it as a fresh start to move forward.
“He’s come back with two spectacular victories, and he never turns down a challenge.”
“He demands the return of his titles.”
Lomachenko’s most recent victory featured a one-of-a-kind moment: after knocking out Commey, he signalled for the fight to be stopped by his opponent’s camp.
When they allowed Commey to continue, Lomachenko opted for a unanimous decision victory.
“Lomachenko is a unique individual,” remarked DuBoef. “In terms of talent, he is tremendously gifted.
“He didn’t want to move forward after Commey was hurt. He sought assistance from the referee.
“It was a display of showmanship and refinement. He never threw Commey’s head hard.
“He had an uncanny ability to read the field and his opponent.
“He doesn’t miss a beat with his footwork. Keep an eye on his hands; they’re in harmony.
“He’s as nimble as they come.
“He’ll be around for a while longer. Then he’ll be the type of guy that walks away, and walks away completely.”
