Boxing: In the midst of anticipation of a prospective mega-fight, Josh Taylor’s promoter Bob Arum has sent a strong warning to him not to neglect Jack Catterall.
In his Scotland homecoming, Taylor must defend his undisputed super-lightweight title against Catterall on Saturday.
Victory may drive him into big fights against US-based giants like Terence Crawford, but Arum has urged him not to think about anything other than this weekend.
“There are a lot of eager individuals on this side of the sea who want to confront him, including Teofimo Lopez and Jose Zepeda,” stated the Top Rank promoter.
“Alternatively, Josh could fight Crawford, Errol Spence Jr, or any of the 147-pound contenders.”
“He isn’t lacking in opponents.
“But let’s get the Catterall fight over with.
“When these fighters look ahead and don’t concentrate on the fight in front of them, that’s when they get beaten.
“Josh is a great talent and the sky is the limit for him.”
Taylor previously said that he anticipates the respect with Catterall to turn into rivalry in the days before their fight.
“I like to show respect. But it depends on how they act towards you.
“It is calm and relaxed – but there is time for the needle to come! And it will come.
“The closer the fight gets, it will come.”
Crawford paves the way for a potential Taylor showdown.
Crawford said last week that he was open to a rematch with Taylor in the future, possibly in the United Kingdom.
Last week, the WBO welterweight champion was in Manchester for Amir Khan’s devastating stoppage loss to Kell Brook on Saturday.
Crawford said of battling Taylor in the future, “Of sure, in the future.”
“I have no objections to any of it. Of certainly, if that struggle makes sense and is the fight that is currently in front of me.”
Crawford’s only fight outside of the United States took place in Scotland when he fought local hero Ricky Burns to win the world title for the first time in 2014.
When asked if he would contemplate fighting Taylor in Scotland again, he answered, “If it makes sense, it makes sense.”
“At the end of the day, I’m a businessman, and that would be a fantastic fight.”
