Boxing Live: Josh Taylor claims that when he and Teofimo Lopez square off in New York on Saturday night, he will make the “clown” pay for his “disrespectful” remarks.
In the wee hours of Sunday morning at Madison Square Garden, Scotland’s WBO super-lightweight champion defends his belt against Lopez.
Since Taylor and Lopez had been engaged in a verbal spat for a while, security had to separate them after the news conference on Thursday.
There is true hostility here, Taylor added. “He has been disrespectful, so I’m going to make him pay for a lot of words he’s said on Saturday.”
“You’ll see Josh Taylor win, perhaps by early KO as well.
“This is a dream come true for me. You always imagine travelling to the United States and competing in arenas like these when you first start out as a professional or even as a little child. The boxing holy ground is Madison Square Garden.
“Fighting here would be the icing on the cake, therefore I would also bring the Tartan Army. I am eager to enter there and bring another dream to fruition.
“This clown is blocking my path,” I said. That’s all he is: a piece of cannon fodder.”
Last year, Taylor survived a controversial match against his fierce opponent Jack Catterall to maintain his perfect record. He never lost a belt in the ring, but as he prepared for a rematch with Catterall, he gave up three of his four championships.
An injury sustained by the Scotsman earlier this year forced the cancellation of the proposed fight with Catterall. Taylor accepted the challenge after Lopez was ordered to defend the WBO belt in person.
With his victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko and unification of three championship belts, Lopez established himself as the top lightweight in the world.
He went up a category after suffering an unexpected loss to George Kambosos and won both of his fights at 140 pounds against Pedro Campa and Sandor Martin, the latter by split decision.
