Boxing News: Rocky Fielding was scheduled to face Canelo Alvarez, the sport’s international superstar, in Madison Square Garden in New York four years ago, nearly to the day.
At the Bournemouth International Centre tonight, Londoner Dan Azeez will square off against Fielding.
Fielding cannot compete in this match because Azeez, who recently made an impression at the local level and currently holds the British title, entered the contest one pound over the light-heavyweight limit.
Azeez won’t be seen as a step down by the Liverpudlian, despite the calibre of resistance he has faced during his career.
Even though I’ve fought [Canelo], won this fight, and accomplished that, I take this fight seriously, he said to Sky Sports.
“I have to be at the top of my game because I know he’s rising and achieving amazing things.
“I must remain focused on this fight and secure the victory. I don’t consider Azeez inferior. I see it as a terrific opportunity for me.
Fielding has only ever suffered defeats to top competitors in Alvarez and Callum Smith. But he has only engaged in combat three times in the four years since that significant battle in New York. He considered retiring. He soon realised, though, that he was stuck in the sport.
He was convinced to return in a proper manner after sparring with former world champion Badou Jack in Dubai.
“I went without going to the gym for a few months myself. He continued, “It was like I know I’m not through yet. “I spent that time alone. In Dubai, I sparred with Badou Jack for almost four days. I was good with it.
After sparring with Jack, he exited the ring and immediately texted Jamie Moore, his trainer. Fielding believed he could succeed in another ascent to the top.
Blasting Azeez would have that effect on him. He would return to bigger contests as a result.
Fielding declared, “I’ve won what I’ve won, and I love to fight. “Getting back in the game is my reward.
“Going to light-heavyweight now. Big fights have tied up all of the top contenders; a match like this on a major network like Sky may put me back in contention.”
