Boxing News: After a hand injury nearly derailed his “dream” homecoming fight in Albania, Florian Marku has pledged to temper his “furious” fighting approach.
The unbeaten welterweight (12-0-1) last competed in August 2022, defeating Miguel Parra Ramirez by unanimous decision while making a sentimental trip back to his home nation.
In order to return to the ring in the upcoming months, he has since been tending to the hand injury with which he began the bout.
“That was a dream come true,” Marku told Sky Sports, and there were about 19,000 people there.
“The only issue was that I went there with a hurt hand and made it more difficult than it needed to be.
“We won, and now we advance with two hands, not just one.”
Given the entertainment value he adds to fights, Marku has been a well-known presence on UK boxing programmes in recent years.
A split decision victory over Maxim Prodan on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s first fight with Oleksandr Usyk in September 2021 earned Marku the IBF International welterweight title, which he retained before his victory over Ramirez last time out. Marku had previously defeated Chris Jenkins in April.
Grant Smith, a trainer who The Albanian King recently partnered with, was important in his progress, and he has been given credit for this.
Marku continued, “I am really thrilled, I have learned a lot of new things, and he will take me to another level.”
“They’ll observe a different Florian in the match, one who is more composed in the ring, less enraged, and more composed in his shots.”
Marku, who is presently ranked 12th in the IBF’s welterweight division, has stated that he hopes to return to the ring by the “end of May or June.”
He said, “I’m ready for whoever they come.”
The British rising star Adam Azim, who in November outperformed the Albanian’s eight-round stoppage of Rylan Charlton with a spectacular second-round knockout, is a fighter Marku might eventually face.
On Saturday, June 10, Azim is getting ready to take centre stage at York Hall for the first time; his opponent has not yet been determined.
Marku has previously competed twice at the renowned London venue, defeating Ivan Godor and Jan Marsalek there in 2019.
“This, in my opinion, is like the first page of a good book, which is why I believe Adam and the promoters selected this location,” said Marku.
“It’s incredible, despite the little size of the room.”
