Boxing News: In the WBC championship eliminator on Sunday night in California, Andy Ruiz dropped Luis Ortiz three times en route to a unanimous decision victory.
The 32-year-old dropped his opponent three times in the first and seventh rounds before finishing the bout to raise his record to 35-2. This was the 32-year-first old’s fight since winning over Chris Arreola by unanimous decision in May 2021. (22 KOs).
Ruiz won the fight by scores of 114–111, 114–111, and 113–112 thanks to knockdowns that proved to be the difference in the judges’ scores. This puts the American heavyweight closer to another chance to win a world championship.
“I’m ready, man. I’m hungry,” Ruiz told Fox Sports afterwards. “I want to be champion again and bring that belt back to Mexico!”
The heavyweight division was reminded of Ruiz’s lethal power by his first and third knockdowns, while the second may have been more of a push that took advantage of an Ortiz who was still healing from the first knockdown.
However, the 43-year-old Cuban boxed well and had some good stretches, and his well-placed jabs kept Ruiz from ever fully controlling the fight.
Deontay Wilder, a former WBC heavyweight champion who has twice stopped Ortiz in his career, was present that evening and seemed amenable to Ruiz’s suggestion of an impending all-American heavyweight fight.
“If Deontay wins in October, me and him are with the same management and we can make this fight happen,” said Ruiz. “Let’s get it on. I’m hungry and I want to be champion again and bring that belt back to Mexico.”
On October 15 in New York, Wilder is slated to take on Robert Helenius. This will be his first fight since being knocked out in the 11th round of his historic trilogy bout with Tyson Fury.
“Deontay Wilder is back and looking for great, exciting fights to give the fans,” Wilder said. “If that’s what the fans want, let’s do it.”
After losing to Gervonta “Tank” Davis by unanimous decision in December, Isaac Cruz won his second straight fight by spectacularly knocking out Eduardo Ramirez earlier in the evening.
After losing to Ortiz in January despite receiving two knockdowns, Charles Martin stopped Devin Vargas in the fourth round of their heavyweight fight to raise his record to 29-3-1 (26 KOs).
