Boxing News: According to promoter Ben-Shalom, Natasha Jonas will ultimately decide whether she pursues a rematch with Terri Harper, a confrontation with Claressa Shields, or another course of action.
Liverpool’s Jonas enters the new year with a lot of options after capping off an outstanding 2022 by adding the IBF belt to her WBO and WBC belts with a victory over Marie-Eve Dicaire in November.
One of them is a rematch with Terri Harper, a fellow Brit, to determine who will hold the title of undisputed super-welterweight. Earlier in 2020, when Jonas was vying to become the super-featherweight world champion, they drew.
The lack of an immediate rematch offer to Jonas continues to cause friction between the fighters’ camps, and it is still unclear whether terms can be reached given that the 38-year-old Liverpudlian is now in a strong position with three belts.
Shalom, the promoter for Jonas, said to Sky Sports News that “Tasha is smarter than me and she understands what she’s doing.”
“We will try to make that happen, but she won’t be forced into anything she doesn’t want to do. She’ll make the decision in the end.
“I believe there are offers for each fight, but Tasha has made a lot of money this year and will continue to make a lot of money in her upcoming fight, whoever it may be.
But in the end, whatever she decides to do is up to her, and we’re here to support that.
Shalom thinks Jonas’ best performances might occur between the 154-pound limit and the 140-pound level she was previously competing at. Despite Jonas’ impressive move up three weight classes, Shalom believes she will perform best between the 154-pound limit and the 140-pound level she was previously competing at.
The American Jessica McCaskill, who was unbeatable at welterweight but recently lost to Chantelle Cameron of Great Britain for all the major super-lightweight belts, was the opponent the promoter had previously preferred.
A confrontation with undisputed middleweight champion Claressa Shields is still a possibility after the American’s stunning victory over Britain’s Savannah Marshall in October.
Shalom said, “I think the McCaskill fight would have been at the top of our list, even though it doesn’t look like it can be made.
“Tasha has done great, but I just don’t think she’s a natural at 154 pounds.
But let’s see what’s available to Harper, Shields, and whoever else; she’ll make the final decision.
