Boxing News: The future of British boxing appears promising. The Great Britain boxing team won its most medals at the Olympics in the previous year. British amateur boxers have performed admirably at the Youth level this year.
Two weeks ago, England’s squad brought home a record seven medals from the World Youth Championships in Spain, including gold medals for light-heavyweight Amber Moss-Birch and super-heavyweight Enriko Itauma.
Moss-Birch is a member of the current crop of promising female boxers.
She told Sky Sports, “I think because of what was at stake, it was a lot more serious this time.” The boxing was of the highest calibre, featuring the best amateurs in the world.
She had only recently upgraded from middleweight for this competition. However, Oltinoy Sotimboeva of Uzbekistan was defeated by Moss-Birch in the opening round of their World championship match.
The Uzbeks are excellent, according to Moss-Birch. At the Worlds, they took first place and won the most medals. “It was just intended to stop her flow and rhythm.
“I was quite anxious before the final. I anticipated a hard fight and a three-three outcome. But as I entered the fray, the punches began to land, and you know a hit is clean when the head snaps back.
“The referee stepped in quickly and gave a count; a couple more things transpired, and it eventually came to three counts… I was overjoyed when it was dismissed. Everyone was cheering, and it was insane.
It was somewhat of a relief, she continued. “Everything fit perfectly.”
Her next goal is to join the entire GB squad and eventually compete at the senior level.
With Claressa Shields vs. Savannah Marshall headlining an all-boxing women’s night in October and Natasha Jonas shining as she became the undisputed world champion, 2022 has been a breakthrough year for women’s professional boxing in Britain.
