Boxing News: Mark Hunt, a 48-year-old mixed martial arts veteran, knocked out Sonny Bill Williams in the fourth round; on November 12, Natasha Jonas challenges Marie Eve Dicaire for the WBO, WBC, and IBF super-welterweight titles.
Former New Zealand rugby player Sonny Bill Williams was knocked out by 48-year-old UFC fighter Mark Hunt in the fourth round, inflicting his first professional boxing loss.
Williams went into the match against Hunt on Saturday night as the betting favourite to win; Hunt having previously fallen to the All-Black legend’s bitter rival, Paul Gallen, back in 2020.
Williams survived the count after Hunt knocked him out in the fourth round, but the referee quickly stepped in as Hill kept firing shots at the 37-year-old former NRL great.
Williams had won each of his nine professional heavyweight matches prior. Veteran mixed martial artist Hunt won his fourth professional fight and declared it to be his final one thereafter.
After the battle, Williams commented, “I would like to say it was an honour to share the ring with Mark Hunt tonight, the Super Samoan.” “I gave it my best effort, but it fell short.
Not much good to come out of that, but it was great to share the ring with a legend like Mark.
“I’m smiling not because I won, but because this is the last time I entered into a ring of the fight of any sort,” a beaming Hunt exclaimed.
Williams, one of just 21 players to have won the Rugby World Cup twice, is only the second player to represent New Zealand in rugby union after initially representing the nation in rugby league.
