Boxing News: Natasha Jonas has had a fantastic year; she won her maiden global title in February and will compete this Saturday for a third.
It’s simple to look past Jonas’ WBO, WBC, and IBF super-welterweight unification fight with Marie-Eve Dicaire and imagine even bigger fights in the future if she prevails, including potential matches with Claressa Shields, who has competed in that division before, former foe Katie Taylor, or welterweight champion Jessica McCaskill.
However, Jonas is unable to permit herself to think in that way. The Dicaire battle is everything to her.
“Every boxer, in my opinion, wants to fight inside a sizable stadium. Hopefully Ben [Shalom, her promoter] can perform at Anfield on a huge fight night with the home crowd. You only want to do that. You desire to act. You want to compete at your best and win titles, “Jonas fessed up.
However, she added: “Because none of those battles will even happen if Saturday doesn’t go well, I can’t even allow myself to imagine or think about the weekend. My full attention is currently focused on the challenge in front of me.”
She faces a tough foe in Dicaire. The Canadian has won two world championships and has only ever suffered one loss, which came in a match for the uncontested championship against Claressa Shields.
Dicaire is also the first southpaw Jonas, who is also a southpaw, has encountered professionally, adding another conundrum for her to solve.
“Naturally, I think she’s bigger, but we’ve worked hard to create the best version of her. If she decides to move backwards and counter or come forward and attack, we’ve done everything in camp we can to prevent her from making use of her size advantage,” Jonas told Sky Sports.
“We wish for her to be at her best. Because the best version of me will exist.
“May the strongest lady triumph? I’ve never been good at making predictions, but I’ve trained hard and put my body through hell to have 10 hard rounds, so that’s what I’m ready for.
