Boxing News: After a great fight with Liam Wilson, Emanuel Navarrete caused a dramatic stoppage in the ninth round to win the vacant WBO super-featherweight title.
Wilson of Australia was a big underdog against Navarrete of Mexico, who was unbeaten and had previously won world championships in the super-bantam and featherweight divisions.
But on Friday at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, Wilson scored the opening goal. Wilson injured Navarrete in the fourth round by getting an early advantage over his all-action opponent. Wilson kept up the barrage and bowled Navarrete off his feet as the Mexican stumbled back.
Wilson afterwards expressed his dissatisfaction with the length of the referee’s count following the knockdown in the fourth round. “Due to the fact that I believed there was a 20-second count, I believed I had won the battle in that sense. Reviewing it, I’ll see what transpires there “He later stated.
As the gumshield was being reinserted, Navarrete bought some extra time because his mouthguard had fallen out.
At the age of 28 and in the 38th match of his professional career, Navarrete made a remarkable comeback.
He combined his attacks as he turned around to face Wilson. However, in the sixth round, Australia was able to shake him up once more as he delivered a big right on his chin.
But the body’s efforts kept making it weaker. With an amazing flush early in the ninth round, Wilson and Navarrete defeated his opponent. After that, he persisted in his assault until he finally forced a thrilling stoppage win at 1-57.
Navarrete stated that he was made of “a lot of work, strength, tonnes of heart, and the Mexican spirit that never lets me down.”
“As a fighter, Liam is. He made a shot that completely shocked me. We obviously made an effort to remain composed. Thankfully, we were able to regain our composure. We went outside to get some rest. We went back to being 100%.”
Wilson expressed disappointment, saying: “Tonight, I fell a little short.”
“However, I knocked him to the ground in the fourth round, and I thought the count was a little excessive. We’ll need to review it and gauge people’s reactions. But he is a real champion.
“I want to return. I truly am a champion. My 12th fight, but I have no justifications. I enjoy both difficulties and conflict. Any day of the week, I’d compete against any other champion. He is a resilient champion. With all due respect, he’s a real social outcast. But since this is boxing, things do happen. He deserves full credit. I wish him well in the future. I’m coming back. There is no doubt about that.”
As of right present, Navarrete holds the title of world champion in three weight classes.
