Eubank Jr. vs Ben: Conor Benn acknowledges that following his failed drug test last year, he “didn’t think he would see another day” and had suicidal thoughts.
Following a positive drug test conducted prior to the anticipated catchweight matchup between Chris Eubank Jr. and Benn in October of last year, Benn was just returned to the WBC rankings.
In response to the WBC’s finding that his “highly-elevated consumption of eggs” was a “logical explanation” for his failed test, Benn issued a statement expressing his gratitude for his return while criticising the sanctioning body for using the egg defence against him.
Benn criticised the British Boxing Board of Control for attacking him “publicly and privately,” treating him with “total disrespect,” and failing to take into account the “fair process or my mental state” when it opened its own inquiry into the situation.
Benn opened out on how the procedure has affected him and his family during a segment on Piers Morgan’s Uncensored show.
Benn said, “It’s hurt me, this has hurt me. I didn’t believe I would get through this time; I didn’t believe I would survive.
“It’s difficult because I felt like I was on death row for something I hadn’t even done when I was shamed for something I hadn’t even done.
“Human being that I am, if I had done something wrong, I would have raised my hands and said, ‘I made a mistake,’ or something similar. Never this, and I felt that seven years of toil, sacrifice, and separation from my family and the reputation I uphold were just destroyed by someone else’s stupidity. The family has had it difficult.
“I had no hope of surviving another day. Yes, I would agree that I was suicidal, and I’m disturbed about it now that I don’t understand how things got so terrible.
“I became pretty upset over it. You must keep in mind that I am innocent whether you believe I am or believe I am not.”
Benn, who is still being looked at by UK Anti-Doping and The BBBoC, has asserted that testing errors were the cause of his failed tests.
Upon his re-entry into the rankings, the BBBoC issued a statement of its own, stating that it had not participated in the WBC’s investigation and that the decision to reinstate him “does not alter the continuing application” of the board’s policies.
