International Boxing Association: Boxing should continue to be an Olympic sport in the Paris 2024 Games, according to the IOC Executive Board.
Due to problems with the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) management and structure of the amateur ranks, boxing’s future in Paris 2024 and the Olympics has been called into question. Nevertheless, the suggestion of the IOC Executive Board should keep the sport in the Olympics at least for the Games in Paris next summer.
The IOC Executive Board has also proposed that the IOC and Olympic movement no longer recognise the IBA.
“The IOC EB considered and accepted the IOC Comprehensive Report on the Situation of the IBA, dated 2 June 2023, as the foundation for this decision,” according to a statement.
“The inquiry concludes that the IBA has not complied with the conditions established by the IOC in its decision to lift the suspension of the IBA’s recognition, which was communicated to the IBA on December 9, 2021, and was not disputed by the IBA.
“The IBA was given the right to be heard and to provide any information it deemed relevant in the preparation of this report.”
The IOC session has scheduled an additional meeting for June 22 to deliberate and vote on the issue.
Due to “persistent issues” with judging, refereeing, financial viability, and governance, the IOC has suspended the IBA as of 2019. Additionally, contrary to practically every international athletic federation since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, it permitted athletes from Belarus and Russia to compete under their respective national flags last year.
The association claims to be keeping a “transparent” strategy as they work to secure the Olympic future of boxing.
“The International Boxing Association (IBA) said that it has made public the report it had presented to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on May 5, 2023, which addressed all of the IOC’s governance issues. “The report was forwarded to the IOC in order to support every action done in the direction of the organization’s restoration and to provide total transparency of the current process. Check back for updates as we get closer to guaranteeing boxing’s Olympic future.”
