Live Boxing News: Lawrence Okolie wants to successfully defend his WBO title before teaching his cruiserweight competitors “how to perform callouts.”
On March 25 at the AO Arena in Manchester, Okolie will square off against fellow unbeaten boxer David Light.
His first competition in a year will also be his first match under the guidance of new trainer SugarHill Steward.
“The anticipation of fight night, the intensity, the undefeated record, the world title, and the pride on the line are unmatched. Obviously, they are the days we anticipate and plan for when we are boxers,” Okolie told Sky Sports.
“I’ve been missing it.”
With Okolie as a recent addition to his stable, Steward now coaches British boxing talents, Tyson Fury and Ben Whittaker.
“You must select an exceptional instructor who appeals to you from among the many different styles available. Therefore, the Sugarhill and Kronk styles are excellent for tall, powerful fighters,” according to Okolie.
“It emphasises distance, feinting, and long, powerful strikes. We’ll see whether I can put what he’s been attempting to instil in me into practice.
“But I believe in myself and my skills.. I’ll go out there and fulfil my purpose.”
While Okolie wouldn’t think twice about fighting Richard Riakporhe, he questions whether his London counterpart is equally as ready.
“Don’t say my name unless you truly want to fight,” he admonished Riakporhe. “This is how simple it is. At any point, I’ll fight that dude. any moment.
“Then it’s finished. Richard is not mandatory, therefore you have a world champion who doesn’t need to. But he’s in my nation and claiming to be the finest. We’ll talk soon.”
If Okolie can defeat Light next month, big cruiserweight battles might be in store for him.
“It has the potential to be one of the most exciting divisions in all of Britain.. You have a lot of good names with good profiles and skills who have complementary styles,” he remarked.
