Natasha Jonas vs. Claressa Shields: A bout between Claressa Shields and Natasha Jonas, two of the best boxers in the world right now, has been offered.
Jonas made history at the recent British Boxing Board of Control Awards when she became the first female to win Boxer of the Year, the yearly honour given to the greatest boxer in the UK at any weight.
At the same event, Claressa Shields, who defeated Savannah Marshall in October to earn the undisputed middleweight championship, was named the Overseas Boxer of the Year.
Jonas is the current undisputed WBC, WBO, and IBF champion at super-welterweight, where the unbeaten Shields previously went unchallenged.
Shields’ representatives, Dmitry Salita and Mark Taffet have proposed that Shields drop to 154 pounds to fight Jonas.
According to Joe Gallagher, “Jonas’ manager and trainer, there was an offer on the table.”
But he also said: “Salita and Mark have consistently pushed for equal pay for women, Claressa’s seven-figure earnings, and higher standards for women’s boxing. The money was insufficient for the significance of the battle when they later made the offer for her to face Claressa.
“They would have declined it if the shoe had been on the other foot. She has three belts as Tasha mentioned,” Gallagher kept talking. “It’s going to be a great fight when Claressa returns to defend her former title.
“The same applies if I make you an offer for one thousand dollars when I’m selling you a car for ten thousand dollars. You made me an offer, but it wasn’t as fantastic as Tasha said it would be.
“They are in charge of it; she has no influence over it. Therefore, the conflict might be finished if they want to return and give her a greater deal. You have to see it from Natasha’s perspective.
“The two combatants in that bout are currently the biggest and hottest in all of boxing. Natasha faces a huge burden with this task.”
He insisted on Jonas, but Observing: “The females are eager to attack each other, which might lead to issues. They deserve a tonne of praise for that.
“It would be beneficial if this fight could happen.”
He cautions against discounting Jonas.
“Everyone seated around the ring, with the exception of two males, knew Tasha had won the match when she began with Terri Harper,” according to Gallagher. “If you look at the scorecards, Tasha came the closest to defeating Katie Taylor.
“There isn’t currently a desire for a rematch.”
