Savannah Marshall and Claressa Shields have agreed to compete for the undisputed middleweight fight in early September, according to promoter Ben Shalom.
Shields, the WBA, WBC, and IBF middleweight champion, had threatened to withdraw from the fight after Marshall’s WBO championship was pushed back from July to September due to arm surgery, but Shalom claims the American has already signed a contract.
Marshall has also agreed to the fight, which promises to be the largest women’s fight of all time to take place in the UK when the unbeaten duo face head-to-head.
“Early September – both fighters are ready, both fighters are signed,” Shalom told Sky Sports News.
“I can’t wait. It’s taken a while.
“Claressa has found her match. It’s the first time in women’s boxing that we’ve seen a genuine rivalry, and it’s a sign of the times.”
“This is a wonderful time for boxing, and it’s an incredible time for any woman who wants to come into the sport.”
The fight was originally scheduled to take place in Marshall’s hometown of Newcastle, but Shalom has disclosed that due to the high level of interest in the event, it may be moved to London.
“We are very close to finalising the venue,” Shalom added.
“The fight has grown to the point where it requires an international venue.” It will take place in the United Kingdom because all of the venues are interested.
“It’s going to be between Newcastle and London, we’ll see.”
Marshall and Shields are both undefeated at 12-0, with Marshall defeating Femke Hermans by knockout in April and Shields defeating Ema Kozin on points in February.
Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, lost to Marshall in 2012 for the first match in her illustrious amateur career.
