Taylor vs Lopez: Josh Taylor anticipates being able to fight in June, with a potential championship defence against Teofimo Lopez coming up after that.
When an injury ruined those preparations, Taylor was set to face off against longtime nemesis Jack Catterall once more. He now appears prepared to face mandatory challenger Lopez before considering his options for facing Catterall.
“It’s a big fight, and I’m excited and buzzing about it. It’s going to be thrilling, and I have that there as well. I don’t think it will last the distance; I think one of us will be defeated,” Taylor told Sky Sports News.
“It seems like a major battle to me. Teofimo Lopez is one notable individual. He is really talkative. He had been yelling out my name for some time.
“He is a skilled combatant,” Taylor continued. “Despite a few poor showings in his most recent matches, he is a skilled fighter. He was the undisputed lightweight world champion in the past.
“He is a young man who aspires to become well-known. I’m definitely looking forward to it because it’s a good fight. The fight promises to be exciting and plenty of action.”
With his outspoken father and trainer by his side, Lopez earned his name by shockingly defeating Vasiliy Lomachenko before falling victim to George Kambosos.
The New Yorker later moved up to super-lightweight and has been looking for a chance to defend his world championship in a new class.
“He or his father might be the one I end up fighting. Both of them have been shouting a lot. There will be a good fight. There will undoubtedly be a fascinating build-up,” said Taylor.
“Every aspect of it is a game. He is promoting himself and generating interest in the fight as part of the process of selling a fight. I’m going to give it back when the build-up occurs and he starts talking trash.”
Although Taylor tore a plantar fascia tendon in his heel during a fight, he plans to make a comeback in June.
He added that he didn’t want to return too soon because the injury was fairly serious.
“In June, I hope to return and be prepared to compete. I’m going to aim for that time.”
