Taylor vs Serrano: Due to an injury to Puerto Rican boxer Amanda Serrano, Katie Taylor’s rematch against her scheduled for May 20 in Dublin will not take place.
Last April, Taylor stunned Serrano in Madison Square Garden’s sold-out opening match and prevailed on a split decision to retain his title as the undisputed lightweight world champion. The teams are debating coming up with a new date for the match.
Taylor was scheduled to compete in her debut professional fight in her native Ireland against Serrano in Dublin.
It will be interesting to see if a homecoming bout can still take place on May 20 with a different opponent.
There won’t be a shortage of prospective substitute opponents for Taylor. One of the top competitors in the sport, the Irishwoman has been the focus of other fighters almost from the moment she started professionally.
Taylor won her maiden world championship in 2017 and went on to become the definitive lightweight champion in 2019 after beating Delfine Persoon in a contested decision.
The following year, Taylor did rematch Persoon and defeated her by a similar margin.
One of the defining milestones in Taylor’s career was her victory over Serrano in their first bout, which took place at Madison Square Garden and was a fantastic occasion.
Serrano sought to return to lightweight and pursue the rematch with Taylor after losing that tough contest on points. She later became the undisputed featherweight champion in February.
Jonas called for Taylor
Taylor was previously boxed by Natasha Jonas, the current unified super-welterweight champion, in a thrilling Olympic match at London 2012, and she also came very near to defeating the Irish star in a professional world title fight.
“You can’t do a [stadium fight at] Croke Park with a nobody,” Jonas previously told Sky Sports. She also has choices.
“If the fight can be made, I’d love to come to Croke Park, and if she wants to come to Anfield for the return, she’s welcome to do so. I may not be at the top of her list, but I’d like both managers to talk about it. In the biggest fights.”
