WBA Super-Welterweight: Terri Harper of England, who had stepped up three weight classes for the contest with Hannah Rankin of Scotland, triumphed in Nottingham by unanimous decision to win her second world championship and the IBO belt.
Terri Harper defeated Hannah Rankin with a strong performance to win the WBA super-welterweight title in Nottingham.
The 25-year-old English challenger, who faced off against Scotland’s Rankin, had stepped up three weight divisions for the contest, and the unanimous decision gave her the IBO title as well.
After a cagey first round, Harper, who is now a two-time world champion and previously held the WBC super-featherweight title, slashed open Rankin’s eyebrow in the second round.
Later, the Scot was just transported to the hospital as a precaution.
However, Harper increased her own intensity before stepping off in the last round to avoid Rankin’s range and win a unanimous decision. Rankin, 32, did start to make an appearance in the fight around the fifth round.
Promoters for Harper will now attempt to schedule a unification match in 2023 against either Natasha Jonas or Marie-Eve Dicaire.
To keep her WBC and IBO super-featherweight titles in 2020, Harper and Jonas had agreed to a draw.
“We’ve got some history to settle,” Harper told DAZN.
