IBA Women’s WBC: The IBA Women’s World Championships take place in New Delhi next month, but GB Boxing will not be sending a team.
Britain has decided to abstain from the event, joining the United States and Ireland in doing so.
Due to issues with corruption and the International Boxing Association’s management, as well as the IBA’s decision to permit Russian and Belarussian boxers to compete under their national flags despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the sport of boxing is currently excluded from the Olympic programme for 2028.
GB Boxing issued the following statement: “The IBA’s recent decision to permit boxers from Russia and Belarus to compete under their national flags, which is in violation of resolutions passed by the IOC [International Olympic Committee] in February and December 2022, as well as ongoing concerns about the future of boxing’s place on the Olympic programme, are reflected in the decision.
“This has further separated IBA from the Olympic movement in addition to the serious, long-standing problems with sporting integrity, governance, transparency, and financial management that the IOC has asked IBA to fix to safeguard boxing’s place on the Olympic programme.
“GB Boxing condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine and expresses its support for its people, athletes, coaches, and administrators.”
This year will also see the Men’s World Championships, and Great Britain will ultimately decide whether or not to enter a team.
“After carefully considering the situation, the board will determine whether or not to allow GB Boxing to compete at the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships in May 2023,” the spokesperson stated.
There will be a qualification event later this year that will be managed by a different task group because the IOC has already suspended the IBA from overseeing Olympic boxing for the 2024 Games.
In that, Great Britain will participate.
“GB Boxing is committed to giving our boxers the best preparation for Paris 2024, and we will continue to work with national federations and tournament directors to provide training and competition opportunities before the Olympic qualifying events, which begin in June 2023 with the European Games in Poland,” they said.
For Britain, boxing has been a very lucrative sport. With six medals in the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021, including the gold medal victories of Lauren Price and Galal Yafai, Great Britain won its most boxing medals in a century.
