Fury vs. Usyk: Concern from all corners of the boxing world has been expressed following the breakdown of negotiations for an undisputed heavyweight bout between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk.
The Fury-Usyk negotiations broke down before the final terms of a deal could be agreed upon, delaying plans for a stadium bout at the end of April.
Since Lennox Lewis in 1999–2000, the heavyweight division hasn’t had an unchallenged champion.
Given how uncommon it is for a bout to unify all four of the main world titles, Fury vs. Usyk might have been a memorable occasion.
Defeating mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte in April of last year and then Derek Chisora in December, Fury is the current WBC heavyweight champion.
Usyk won the WBA, WBO, and IBF belts in 2021 and successfully defended them against Anthony Joshua in their rematch in August. Nevertheless, he will soon have to face his own mandatory challengers.
The WBC worries that “this window of opportunity will not be there in a long time” regarding an uncontested fight.
The WBC president, Mauricio Sulaiman, expressed his “great disappointment” with the cancellation of the Fury vs. Usyk match to Sky Sports.
Sulaiman of Sky Sports said, “The WBC has been very supportive of the final unification match between Fury and Usyk to declare the undisputed champion in the heavyweight division.”
It is quite regrettable that such a match won’t happen because this window of opportunity won’t come up again for a very long time. It will also be challenging to get everything in line because each organisation has mandated.
For his upcoming battle, Fury is currently looking for a new opponent. Deontay Wilder and Andy Ruiz, two past champions, are currently listed as the top two heavyweight contenders by the WBC.
Although Wilder and Ruiz have not yet agreed to square off, the WBC has previously requested that they battle each other in a heavyweight title final eliminator.
“The mandatory contender for the division will be decided by a final elimination between Wilder and Ruiz, according to WBC convention rules,” Sulaiman said.
