WBC Super-Welterweight: Patricia Berghult was defeated by Natasha Jonas, who won the WBC and WBO super-welterweight titles.
Jonas received a thunderous welcome when boxing on the Liam Smith vs. Hassan Mwakinyo undercard at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool. She would not be dissuaded, and in the end, she defeated her rival champion by a considerable margin.
Jonas only won her maiden global title in Manchester in February after moving up three weight classes. She faced Berghult in her subsequent bout in an effort to combine the latter’s WBC belt with the already-held WBO super-welterweight title held by Jonas.
Patricia Berghult of Sweden got things going quickly by countering Jonas with a cross. Berghult was struck by a southpaw right punch from Jonas that clipped her. However, the Swedish woman moved quickly on her feet, making it challenging for Jonas to make eye contact.
The fans erupted in jubilant applause as the Liverpudlian waded in in the second round to open up with a flurry. They sparred in the middle of the ring, and Jonas used her strength to outpunch Berghult with a left cross just as the round’s final horn sounded.
Berghult was busy working close by while Jonas delivered powerful blows to the Swede’s head. In the fourth round, she pursued Berghult, but her poor timing allowed the WBC belt-holder to hammer in a left hook. The right punch from Berghult smashed over as they exchanged blows. Berghult was kept alert by a damaging right hand from Jonas that caught her chin as the round came to a close.
Berghult fled as a result in the fifth. However, Jonas limited her room when completing combinations with her powerful left cross. When Beghult had her back to the ropes, she reeled a right off. Nevertheless, Jonas persisted in attacking, switching between the head and the torso.
In the sixth round, Jonas pushed her advantage and continued to focus on the head while supporting Berghult.
The Swede fought back, making a strong effort to sway Jonas. However, the WBO champion persisted in coming forward and ended the round with a right-left that caught Berghult’s chin and a lead hook that connected.
In the eighth round, Jonas started to make a statement. A left may have carved through to the chin by aiming for the torso. Berghult was briefly startled. Jonathan felt it. She increased her attack once more, sending the Swede reeling in her heels. She skilfully set up powerful blows, firing a right punch to the jaw.
