Undisputed World Champions: Following triumphs by points in New York on Saturday night, Amanda Serrano and Alycia Baumgardner have clinched the title of indisputable world champions.
Serrano defeated Erika Cruz by a majority decision to add the WBA featherweight title to her collection of titles, which also includes the WBC, IBF, WBO, IBO, and The Ring. A rematch with undisputed lightweight world champion Katie Taylor has been scheduled for May 20 in Dublin.
After defeating Elhem Mekhaled, the WBA champion entering the match, in a unanimous decision, Baumgardner currently has all of the super-featherweight division’s championships.
Cruz gave Serrano a serious fright as she fought through a severe gash on her forehead to the end, but Serrano emerged victorious with scores of 98-92, 98-92, and 97-93, ending Cruz’s 14-fight winning run.
After being the busier fighter and landing more punches in the first two rounds, Mexican star Cruz’s cut was brought on by an unintentional headbutt in the third round.
As the fight went on and Cruz’s head began to bleed, Serrano became stronger. Cruz eventually lost the bout after a tangle of legs in the last round.
Cruz, meanwhile, kept up a frenetic rhythm of her own punches.
Later, Serrano stated: “We were aware that she was a Mexican champion. What we anticipated was that. For that purpose, we trained.”
Mekhaled was twice stunned by Baumgardner on the way to her victory, which marked her eighth straight triumph since suffering her only professional loss to Christina Linardatou five years ago.
Mekhaled was damaged in the seventh round and twice in the third round as Baumgardner triumphed decisively, 99-89, 99-89, 98-90.
While she was unable to score a knockdown, Mekhaled occasionally plagued Baumgardner and was likely the better fighter in the final few rounds, appearing to stun the American at one point.
Following his remarks, Baumgardner stated: “I was obedient and tenacious. tough work. I had to fight the people I had to fight, and I won. I like to push myself. Only then will I be able to assess my situation and determine how I might improve.”
On the card, Australian Skye Nicholson, who fights out of the UK, defeated Tania Alvarez at featherweight on points, and Somalian challenger Ramla Ali defeated Australian Avril Mathie at junior featherweight to advance toward a title opportunity.
