Transgender Boxing Category: In 2023, the World Boxing Council (WBC) will issue a call for interested athletes to apply, according to WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman. The organisation aims to add a new transgender category.
A trans fighter assigned as a boy at birth would only be permitted to compete against other trans fighters also classified as male at birth under the proposed category’s adoption of the “at birth” requirement.
Sulaiman told The Telegraph, “We are going to issue a global call for people who are interested in 2023 and we will set up the protocols, start a consultation, and maybe develop a league and a tournament.”
“This is the right time to do it, and we’re doing it for inclusiveness and safety. We have pioneered women’s boxing regulations, so thanks to what we’re putting in place, there will never be a risk of a man fighting a woman.
“Regardless of gender transition, a man facing a woman in boxing must never be permitted. There should be no room for doubt in this situation, and we want to approach it openly and wisely. No transgender person, whether a man or a woman, will ever be permitted to challenge someone who is born with a different gender.”
Transgender issues have gained significant attention as sports try to strike a balance between diversity and preventing undue advantages.
The world governing organisation for swimming, FINA, decided to ban transgender athletes from top women’s competitions in June 2022. They also established a working group to create an “open” category.
According to FINA’s rules, transgender athletes must be fully transitioned by the time they turn 12 in order to compete in women’s events.
However, Sulaiman argues that his suggested system is the best way to make the sport more accessible because the stakes are even higher in combat sports given the possible bodily danger for competitors.
“We are establishing a set of rules and institutions so that transgender boxing may occur, as they fully deserve to if they want to box,” Sulaiman continued.
We don’t yet know how many boxers there are, but in 2023, a universal registry will be opened, allowing us to learn more about them and work backwards from there.
In response, the British Boxing Board of Control stated that while discussions for a transgender category are just “hypothetical,” those about their policy have already started.
According to BBBofC general secretary Robert Smith, “At the moment this is hypothetical, but we can see it coming and we are looking at our transgender policy.”
“It is who you are by birth, just like rugby union. We plan to be completely ready if and when it does (happen). It will be necessary to take into account both medical and, maybe more significantly, legal factors.”
