3.2 Million Rupee Deal: In the first Women’s Premier League 2023 Auction, the Gujarat Giants purchased Australian cricketer Ashleigh Gardner for a staggering INR 3.20 crore. With Mumbai Indians, UP Warriorz, and Gujarat Giants locked in a fierce bidding battle, Ash Gardner’s bid had an initial base price of INR 50 lakh. In the end, the Giants prevailed.
A total of 409 players, including 246 Indians and 163 foreign players, will be auctioned off at the Mumbai event. There are 202 overall players with caps, while 199 are uncapped. With the five teams, there are a total of 90 slots available, 30 of which are designated for international players.
Mumbai will host the WPL’s debut season from March 4 to March 26. 22 games will be contested, with the Brabourne Stadium and D.Y. Patil Stadium serving as the venues for the prestigious tournament, which will feature the five teams Gujarat Giants, UP Warriors, Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Gardner, who has won two T20 World Cups with Australia, is an essential player in all formats with to her batting and deft off-spin. The 25-year-old was named Australia’s top female international player for 2021–2022, winning the Belinda Clark Award. Gardner, the No. 1 T20I all-rounder at the moment, won the WBBL 2008 Player of the Tournament award. She made her T20I debut in February 2017 against New Zealand, and shortly after that, she made her ODI debut in the same match.
She received her Baggy Green in 2019 from fellow First Nations player Dan Christian, making history as the second woman and third Indigenous player to play a Test match for Australia. From the beginning of her playing career, Gardner made an immediate impression. In January 2015, she led New South Wales to the Under-18 Cricket Australia Championships championship and topped the runs chart there, earning her the title of Player of the Championship.
She was named Player of the Tournament at the 2015 Imparja Cup and competed for Australia’s development team in the Shooting Stars before earning a call-up to the national team thanks to her prowess with the bat and ball for the Sydney Sixers.
