Cricket Live: Jonny Bairstow of England will play for Yorkshire’s second XI this week in his injury comeback, and he will maintain wicket for a portion of the match.
Since breaking his leg on a golf course in September of last year, Bairstow has been sidelined.
In the aftermath, the 33-year-old was unable to play in either England’s winter Test series against Pakistan and New Zealand or their successful T20 World Cup campaign in Australia in October and November.
In an effort to improve his fitness before England’s Test season, which begins against Ireland on June 1 and finishes with the five-match Ashes series against Australia on June 16, Bairstow will play against Nottinghamshire’s second string.
In his first game since the second Test against South Africa at Emirates Old Trafford in August, Bairstow is likely to mix wearing the gloves with playing in the outfield, according to Yorkshire head coach Ottis Gibson.
Prior to getting hurt, Bairstow had a standout summer in 2022 that included four Test hundreds. He has already said he would prefer to keep wicket for Yorkshire as he tries to get back into the England XI.
With four hundred in six Tests, since he replaced Bairstow at No. 5 in the international team, Harry Brook has flourished, so one way for Bairstow to reclaim his spot could be to take Ben Foakes’ place behind the stumps.
“Bairstow will play this week,” according to Gibson. We’ll go check him out and see how he does.
“He’s been out for such a long time, so it’s a fitness evaluation for him to evaluate what he’s capable of, such as sprinting around the outfield or standing behind the wickets. He’ll probably try both to see which makes him feel most at ease.”
In the week before England’s matches, Yorkshire will play Glamorgan in the LV= County Championship, then Durham the following week. This could provide Bairstow with extra match action.
