Cricket News: At the age of 39, South Africa’s Hashim Amla declared his retirement from all forms of cricket.
Amla was second only to Jacques Kallis (13,206) for South Africa in terms of international runs scored for the Proteas between 2004 and 2019, including 9,282 in 124 Test matches.
The right-311 hander’s not out against England at The Kia Oval in 2012 was his greatest Test cricket score, and he continues to be the only South African to record a Test triple-century.
In one-day international cricket, a format in which he totalled 8,113 runs across 181 games, no South African has amassed more hundreds than his 27.
Amla scored the final of his 57 first-class centuries against Northamptonshire in September while playing for Surrey, which won the LV= Insurance County Championship the previous year.
Amla claims “I have fantastic memories of the Oval ground, and I am immensely appreciative of all that has occurred. At last, I let it go as a player.
“A sincere thank you to Alec Stewart (director of cricket), the entire Surrey staff, the players, and the supporters.
“Because of how expertly it is run, any foreign player would feel honoured to be affiliated with the Surrey ship. I hope they succeed and have many more triumphs.”
Amla is a brilliant player, says Stewart
Alec Stewart, the director of cricket for Surrey, who recently took time off to attend to his wife’s ongoing cancer treatment, said: “Hashim’s retirement will be mourned by all of us at Surrey County Cricket Club, but we all salute his extraordinary career. He will be remembered appropriately as one of the greats of the game, ” he said.
“Hashim is a nice person as well as a fantastic cricket player. He has been a fantastic source of information for the team to use both on and off the field.
“He has demonstrated his desire to dig in and do what is necessary to get his side. A result in difficult situations in addition to scoring important goals at crucial times.”
“I am incredibly appreciative of what he has done for Surrey. And I use him to inspire other young athletes by showing them what a great professional looks like.”
