Cricket News: According to Kapil Dev, the captain of the India team that won the World Cup in 1983, a player should cease competing if he feels the burden of representing his nation. The renowned all-rounder criticised modern players for whining about the pressure, telling them to “start banana stands or sell eggs” if they couldn’t handle playing international cricket.
He continued by saying that a player should feel honoured to have the chance to serve his country, which has a population of 100 crores, and that he should thus take great pride in it rather than using the excuse of pressure.
“We are playing the IPL, I keep hearing. The pressure is enormous. I mean, this word is so common. I tell them, ‘Don’t play.’ Who is making the request? There is pressure, but if you perform at that level, people will both respect and mistreat you. Don’t play if you’re terrified of being abused. You are under pressure since you are the country’s representative. How is that even doable? 20 of you are playing out of a population of 100 crores, and you claim to be under pressure. Say it’s an issue of pride instead. People are showing you so great love. Learn to take that pride,” said Kapil as quoted by Hindustan Times.
“The word ‘pressure’ is American. Don’t work if you don’t want to. Are you being coerced by anyone? Jaa ke kele ki shop lagao. Ande becho ja ke. (Open a banana stand; go out and get eggs.) But why do you feel under pressure when you have an opportunity? Enjoy it and treat it as a pleasure,” he said.
Additionally, Kapil challenged the Indian athletes to put their all into their work, saying that doing so will make things simpler. Kapil said, “When you first start, the task will seem simple. Nothing positive can occur if the same item is referred to as pressure, though.”
