Cricket News: Meg Lanning, the captain of Australia, made her comeback to cricket on January 5 for Victoria Women in the Women’s National Cricket League 2022–23 season. Belinda Clark, a former captain of Australia’s World Cup-winning team, greeted the fellow player and projected that Lanning will be a highlight of the following two years.
In August 2022, the 30-year-old batter made her final international appearance, leading Australia to the gold medal in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. She then startled the cricket community by announcing that she would be taking an indefinite break from international play to devote more time to herself. She withdrew from the Hundred in 2022 and was absent from the Women’s Big Bash League in that same year.
She returned to cricket, though, through Australia’s domestic one-day competition, beginning innings against New South Wales Women and scoring 29 runs off 32 balls. Belinda thinks Lanning’s decision to take a break was courageous and expressed her hope for some outstanding play from the current Australian skipper.
“Meg showed courage by removing herself when she realised she needed to do so. If Meg has some outstanding cricket in front of her, you may return reinvigorated. I predict that over the next couple of years, you’ll see several fantastic Meg Lanning highlights since cricket is a game that demands your full attention at all times. She’ll be fantastic. I’m very happy that she’s back,” Belinda Clark said to reporters.
Lanning was misplayed by a delivery from Lauren Smith, but star all-rounder Ellyse Perry struck 147 runs off 125 balls and captain Nicole Faltum added 107* to help Victoria defeat New South Wales with 321 runs. Tess Flintoff and Perry then excelled with a ball to bowl, limiting the opposition to 233/8 to secure an 88-run victory, their second win of the year.
After being named captain in 2014, Lanning has led Australia to triumphs in two T20 World Cups, a one-day World Cup in 2022, and the Commonwealth Games gold medal. Alyssa Healy and Tahlia McGrath led Australia during her break when they travelled to India in December 2022 and won the five-match T20I series by a score of 1-4. Lanning is a member of Australia’s team for the forthcoming three-match One-Day International series beginning on January 16.
