Cricket News: After struggling with physical and fitness issues earlier this year, Ollie Robinson believed he would never be able to play cricket again.
The seamer has played a significant role in England’s tour of Pakistan, picking up eight wickets in the first two Test matches, including the tenth one in Multan that enabled the visitors to win the series with one Test remaining.
However, at the beginning of the year, it appeared unlikely that Robinson would play for England because he suffered an injury in the fifth Ashes Test in Hobart in January and was criticised by the former bowling coach Jon Lewis for his lack of professionalism and poor condition.
In August, the 29-year-old made a comeback to the team for the South Africa series, and he said that the negative attention improved him.
Before the third Test in Karachi, he quipped to Nasser Hussain: “I don’t believe I’ve ever needed a kick in the pants because I always knew what to do. International cricket is quite different from county cricket.
“Before he said anything in the open, I was aware that what he was saying was accurate. Although it appeared harsh at the time, it actually enabled me to be where I am now.”
Robinson had many injury issues at the beginning of 2022, but he feels like he is now thriving in the current England lineup.
“It was difficult; there were times when I wondered if I would ever play cricket again. After returning to my previous level of fitness, I would play one game before my back began to spasm,” he explained.
“I worked so hard during that time to prepare, and it’s just a shame I wasn’t able to return to the field. Several injections and numerous scans were required to get me back on track.”
