Former Ranji cricketer Nagaraju Budumuru defrauded 60 companies for INR 3 crore while posing as YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. Incidentally, last year, the 28-year-old called up an employee of city electronics pretending as Reddy’s personal assistant and urging him to support Ricky Bhui, who has done extremely well for Andhra in the recent past.
After Budumuru emailed falsified and phoney credentials to prove his affiliation with the National Cricket Academy, the electronics company ultimately had to pay INR 12 lakhs (NCA). After filing a report, police began looking for the money and eventually detained Budumuru in his hometown.
“Our team started tracking the money that was supposed to be delivered as sponsorship as soon as they received the complaint. The cash flow trace led to Budumuru. This week, we caught him in his hometown of Yavaripetta in the Andhra Pradesh district of Srikakulam,” according to Dr Balsing Rajput, DCP (cyber-crime), as reported by the Hindustan Times.
The desire for a lavish lifestyle sends Budumuru to prison.
Notably, following a thorough investigation and questioning, police found around INR 7.6 lakh. In a report released by the cyber crime division, it is also alleged that Budumuru hit rock bottom in 2018 as a result of failing to live up to expectations, and that is when he first began missing his opulent lifestyle. Budumuru began fooling others in order to keep up with it.
“After 2018, when he began to struggle on the field, he began to long for the opulent lifestyle he had grown accustomed to. It was his main motivation for defrauding people under various guises,” according to a cyber police official featured in the paper.
Budumuru was selected to represent Andhra Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy in 2014 after displaying a lot of promise in his early years of cricket. He was on the state squad for a while, but he was unable to defend his spot. While he was a member of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Indian Premier League team, he was never given the opportunity to make his league debut.
