IND vs AUS: In the fourth Test match between Australia and India, Kohli took a catch at slip to get rid of Nathan Lyon.
During Day 2 of the ongoing fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 on Friday, Ravichandran Ashwin got six wickets and Cameron Green scored his first-ever international century (March 10).
Throughout the history of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Ashwin and Nathan Lyon have each taken the most wickets, and Usman Khawaja is the only other Australian to have scored 150 or more in an inning in India. While Australia scored 480 runs in their first innings, Green hit his first century in international play.
India’s Virat Kohli, who has 300 catches overall in international cricket, also made history. In order to put a stop to Australia’s opening innings, he took Nathan Lyon’s catch at first slip on an Ashwin delivery. With this catch, he eclipsed former great Sunil Gavaskar’s previous record of 108 catches in Test cricket.
The 34-year-old batsman is currently only six catches behind Sachin Tendulkar’s 200-match total of 115 after taking 109 in 108 tests. Kohli has taken the most catches in Test matches among those currently playing cricket, 10 more than Ajinkya Rahane, who has only played in 82 Tests and has taken 99 catches.
Rahul Dravid, a former captain and current head coach, tops the list with a remarkable total of 209 catches in 163 Test matches, while VVS Laxman, the director of the National Cricket Academy, ranks second among Indian cricketers with 135 catches in 134 tests.
With 141 catches in 271 games, Virat Kohli is second among Indian cricketers in ODIs. Mohammad Azharuddin, a former all-star hitter, tops the list in ODIs with 156 catches in 334 games. Rohit Sharma, who has so far collected 58 catches in 148 games, is only one catch behind Kohli with 58 catches in 115 T20Is.
India is currently 444 runs behind the visitors in their first innings of the current Test in Ahmedabad. But, the home team still has all of its wickets in tact and will aim to cut the gap and go closer to Australia’s first-innings total of 480 on Day 3.
