IND Vs AUS: With the third Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy concluded in just three days, the pitch at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore caused quite a commotion among the cricketing community. Following the first two days of the Test match, which saw a total of 30 wickets fall, many former cricketers, including Matthew Hayden, Michael Clarke, and Dilip Vengsarkar, expressed their displeasure with the playing conditions. The stadium’s pitch received three demerit points from ICC, which also classified the conditions as “poor”.
In the interim, former cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth also shared his opinion of the playing surface. Srikkanth used the example of KL Rahul, who was benched for the third Test, to argue that Rahul’s absence from Indore was for the best since, in his opinion, if the cricketer had underperformed, his career may have been over.
“Let me start by saying that I am pleased for KL Rahul. Thank goodness he chose not to play. Very goodness he chose not to participate because his career might have finished if he had played on these wickets and struggled to get going in the following two Tests. Speaking frankly,” Srikkanth stated.
“Batting is quite challenging on these pitches. Whatever the case, batting is challenging. On these surfaces, nobody can score runs, not even Virat Kohli. When bowling in the first innings, Kuhnemann got the ball to rip through and turn square, if you stared at it. Taking wickets is not a major deal on these wickets. I would have taken wickets even if I had bowled. We must face these difficult conversations,” the former Indian opener remarked on his YouTube account.
Not at all a decent way to promote Test cricket: Srikkanth
It is not a proper representation of Test cricket, according to Srikkanth, who criticised the hosts for the surfaces used thus far in the series. He also recalled how India won the series easily in 2008 despite the lack of preparation for turning circuits.
“Not at all a good representation of Test cricket. They are acting incorrectly. Definitely, if you see the matchup with Australia in 2008. The pitches weren’t very spectacular, but India would go on to win the series 2-0. Yet starting on Day 1, the situation has a square spin. On these pitches, it’s challenging to monitor the batting. It’s not a great way to promote Test cricket,” Srikkanth said.
