IND vs AUS: Shreyas agreed to bowl the 62nd over after Rohit asked him to do so.
On the cricket field, it is usual to see Shreyas Iyer bat and occasionally dominate the opposing bowlers, but it is highly uncommon to see him roll his arm over during a match. Iyer is well-known for his batting prowess, therefore it’s uncommon to see him charging with the ball in hand to grab a wicket.
Nevertheless, he demonstrated the same qualities when skipper Rohit Sharma asked him to give India a breakthrough when Australia’s Steven Smith and Usman Khawaja were attempting to right the ship.
Shreyas agreed to bowl the 62nd over after Rohit begged him to. But what actually happened was a little unexpected because Shreyas initially bowled a standard leg spin delivery to Smith before bowling an off-break delivery to Khawaja.
He eventually delivered Smith a full toss, which Smith simply smashed down the wicket for a single. The very next ball Khawaja received was a typical off-spin delivery, and he simply shouldered his arms and allowed it easily slip into KS Bharat’s gloves.
Even-steven affair on Day 1 of the Ahmedabad Test
Australia chose to bat first after winning the toss. They got off to a strong start as Travis Head and Usman Khawaja put up 61 runs for the first wicket before Head was bowled by Ravichandran Ashwin, the top-off spinner in India. Khawaja kept the other end together and played with a lot of tenacity to eventually reach his first-ever Test tonne against India even while wickets were falling from one end.
Khawaja maintained his form as he scored 104 runs off 251 balls, including 15 fours, and helped Australia finish in a strong position with 255/4. Mohammad Shami took two wickets for India, while Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja both took one.
