IPL 2023: In their most recent Indian Premier League 2023 encounter on April 10, Lucknow Super Giants defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by a dramatic margin of one wicket to take the lead in the standings. At Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, the KL Rahul-led team successfully chased down the 213-run goal off the final ball of the innings despite a few early mistakes.
For Lucknow, Nicholas Pooran and Marcus Stoinis starred with spectacular hits, while Indian talents Rahul, Krunal Pandya, and Deepak Hooda were unable to chip in once more. Only 18 runs were scored by Rahul off of 20 deliveries, as he once more struggled to demonstrate any desire to speed up his innings. Wasim Jaffer, a former cricket player, is surprised by Rahul’s performance and thinks he needs to take the initiative and take advantage of the Super Giants’ batting unit’s remarkable depth.
“I’m shocked. It was also a little uncomfortable. If you’re the captain and you’re pursuing 213, you must take the initiative. Rahul will need to alter his goal. LSG has a strong batting order. Krunal Pandya and Deepak Hooda have not yet been sacked from the current roster. The batting has a lot of depth as well. While the squad has excellent backups, he will need to demonstrate some motivation. It’s not like LSG wouldn’t be able to score runs if Rahul is out,” Wasim Jaffer told ESPNcricinfo.
The non-striker is under strain because of Rahul’s delayed approach: Wasim Jaffer
Jaffer also criticised Rahul’s traditional strategy in T20 franchise cricket, saying it placed undue pressure on the players in the dugout and the non-striker. Rahul chose several shots defensively as Lucknow lost three early wickets in the match against RCB, but he didn’t appear particularly motivated to resist pressure when Stoinis was driving the attack in the middle overs.
“Rahul has played some brilliant innings, but occasionally he takes a little too long in franchise cricket. It also puts pressure on the players in the dugout and the non-striker. Hence, the other batters are forced to take needless risks. Rahul is able to play aggressive cricket. He simply needs to bat with greater intention,” according to Jaffer.
Despite Lucknow’s strong start to the season, Rahul has only managed to score 100 runs from four innings at an average of 20.25 and a dismal strike rate of 100.00 in the IPL 2023.
