IPL: The Indian Premier League (IPL), according to former India wicketkeeper-batsman Farokh Engineer, is the envy of the world, but Test cricket cannot be abandoned in favour of franchise league cricket.
While nations like India, England, and Australia are devoted to the longer format of the game, franchise leagues are preferred by players from smaller nations because of the financial rewards. He claimed that the World Test Championship shows the rest of the world that limited-overs and test cricket can both be thrilling.
“It’s not a good thing that test cricket is in jeopardy. The fact that the game is thriving because of T20 leagues throughout the world is positive, but Test cricket should never be neglected.
According to Engineer, who was cited by My Khel, “That is why the World Test Championship is a showcase for the world that Test cricket can be just as interesting as limited overs cricket.”
An engineer who flew to London to see the World T20 final between India and Australia remarked that, depending on the circumstances, this is a game of chess, adding that the pitch mostly advantages the batters.
“Depending on the circumstances, it’s a game of chess. For hitters, it is the final test. Both Test cricket and limited overs cricket should be allowed,” he continued.
The 85-year-old continued by saying that both in Test and limited-overs cricket, India has excelled. Further, he claimed that Indian cricket controls the purse strings, which gives him great joy.
“India has established a lead in Test cricket, and our IPL is the envy of the world in limited overs cricket. I am really happy that Indian cricket is pulling the reins,” he stated.
The Oval in London, where India won their first-ever Test match in England in 1971, is now hosting the second iteration of the WTC championship. Notably, Engineer’s 59-run effort in the first innings had made a vital impact to that legendary triumph.
