ODI World Cup: Kumar Sangakkara, a legend in Sri Lankan cricket, outlined his predictions for which heavyweight teams will prevail against subcontinental teams at the ICC ODI World Cup in 2023. The 50-over main event is tentatively planned to take place in India in October and November.
The former Sri Lankan captain who guided his team to the championship game of the ODI World Cup in 2011 stated during a presentation on Star Sports that the demands of the sport have altered since that year. He continued by saying that since the pitches in India are spin-friendly, the foreign teams will have an advantage because they have gotten used to playing on the Asian continent, which has helped them develop the art of playing spin.
“I believe that cricket has evolved quite a little since 2011 when I would argue that Asian playing conditions favoured players from the subcontinent. However, over time, I believe that England, Australia, and New Zealand have gotten far stronger at playing spin than even the subcontinental sides,” said Sangakkara on the programme.
IPL has been very beneficial for exposure: Kumar Sangakkara
The Indian Premier League (IPL) has given both domestic and foreign players the opportunity to gain experience and exposure while playing in Indian conditions. As a result, they have performed remarkably well for their respective national teams in the international ICC competitions. Sangakkara added that the top-tier competition had given the players the opportunity to play a range of strokes and gain the necessary exposure to compete in ICC events.
“You see a lot of innovative foot-based strokes like reverse sweeps, paddle shots, and sweeps. That, in my opinion, has fundamentally changed how the subcontinent views cricket. The IPL has been very beneficial for exposure as well,” said the former Lankan Lions captain.
All teams competing in the upcoming month-long mega event have already started formulating ideas and testing with their teams. In order to fight for the coveted crown, the teams will try to find their core before the event.
