SL Cricket: It is known that Star Sports and FanCode will compete fiercely with the existing broadcasters, Sony Sports, to win the new contract.
On March 1, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is anticipated to launch the global market for media rights bids. Formerly, Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN) received worldwide media rights for a three-year period beginning in 2020; however, that agreement is slated to expire this year.
It is known that Star Sports and FanCode will compete fiercely with the existing broadcasters, Sony Sports, to win the new contract. Also, according to a Cricbuzz report, Viacom 18 has joined the fray in the battle for the rights as the newest bidder. Viacom 18 has also spoken with the cricket board to better grasp the situation and determine whether a bid procedure is still feasible.
Yet, given the recent decline in the television industry, the timing of the offer is currently inappropriate. The ongoing showpiece Border-Gavaskar Trophy match between India and Australia, which has failed to draw commercials, reflects this.
The upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) and the Indian Premier League (IPL), which are considered to be events that could get a lot of attention, are supposed to be the ones that advertisers may be saving for.
Sri Lanka is reliant on India’s performance in the bidding process.
The SLC global rights are currently worth between $23 and $25 million. The tender may total somewhat more than $25 million, but it will entirely depend on how frequently Sri Lanka hosts India during that time. The Future Tours Plan (FTP) states that India would only play Sri Lanka in eight games, including two-Test series in 2026 and three ODIs and three T20Is in July 2024.
Last-minute acquisitions, however, cannot be ruled out considering the volume of games lately played between the two neighbouring teams and the new contract. After the worldwide market has been covered, the board will start the process of selling the rights for its domestic market.
