SA20 2023: Jacob Oram, a former all-rounder in bowling for New Zealand, was hired on Wednesday to serve as MI Cape Town’s bowling coach for the inaugural SA20 tournament, which begins in January.
The Kiwi will bring a wealth of IPL expertise to the team because he took part in the lucrative competition back in the day. He played for the Chennai Super Kings in 2008 and 2009, the Rajasthan Royals in 2011, and the Mumbai Indians in the 2013 season, which saw them claim their first victory.
Jacob Oram’s playing and coaching careers
Between 2001 and 2012, Oram played for the BlackCaps in 33 Tests, 160 One Day Internationals, and 36 Twenty20 Internationals. The legendary all-rounder is also one of the 36 New Zealand cricketers to have amassed 1000 runs in a Test match, and he is one of only six Kiwi players to have done so in ODIs.
Notably, a few injuries also hampered Oram’s international cricketing career. The bowling all-rounder started his coaching career in 2014 with the New Zealand A squad and was also involved as the assistant coach of the New Zealand women’s cricket team.
In addition to Oram, other hires in the coaching establishment include James Pamment, a former Australian Test specialist, Hashim Amla, a legendary South African batsman, and head coach Simon Katich (fielding coach). The team manager for the preseason has been named as seasoned Proteas all-rounder Robin Peterson.
On January 9, 2023, MI Cape Town will play the Paarl Royals to open their SA20 season. The championship game is slated on February 11. The franchise will be eager to set high standards and emulate the success of the IPL franchise as it looks to get off to a dream start in the SA20.
