T20I Captain: Aiden Markram has been named as Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) T20I captain. Temba Bavuma, who stepped down from the position after the team lost in the group stage of the previous two T20 World Cups, is replaced by Markram as the captain of the team in the shortest format.
In addition, the apex board has hired Rory Kleinveldt as the bowling coach for the white-ball setup and JP Duminy as the batting coach. Interestingly, Kleinveldt will only be a member of the lineup for the upcoming West Indies series while Duminy will remain with the team permanently.
“I’d like to congratulate Aiden on being named the Proteas T20I team’s captain. He has effectively led on various levels, thus he is very comfortable with leadership. He exudes confidence and possesses all the skills necessary to be successful in the profession. We have no doubt that we’ll be able to help South Africa advance,” according to director of cricket Enoch Nkwe.
“We also want to express our gratitude to Temba (Bavuma) for successfully filling the role for the past two years. He has performed admirably during this time and now has a new role to play within the national framework,” the speaker continued.
Markram recently experienced success when he guided the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to victory in the first SA20 competition. He guided the U19 squad to victory in the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2014. With those successes in his back pocket, he would be determined to be successful with the senior setup.
West Indies ODI and T20I teams are announced by CSA.
The Proteas are all prepared to face off against the West Indies in a three-match ODI series, followed by the same number of home T20I matches. Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada were rested from the ODI team, hence the CSA confirmed the squads for the multi-format series.
