ICC Men’s Test Team: On January 24, the International Cricket Council (ICC) unveiled its Men’s Test Team of the Year, with England’s red-ball skipper Ben Stokes serving as the team’s captain. Rishabh Pant, who is a wicketkeeper-batter, was the lone Indian player to make the ICC’s best XI. Since the ICC selected four cricketers as their best lineup, Australian players make up the majority of the starting XI.
Only two players—power batter Marnus Labuschagne from Australia and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant from India—were also on the ICC Men’s Test Team for 2021. Three Indian players were present overall last year, but there is only one this time. Since Ben Stokes assumed the captaincy, England’s Test cricket has experienced a tremendous uptick, and the International Cricket Council has appointed Stokes as the team’s leader.
Usman Khawaja of Australia and Kraigg Brathwaite, the captain of the West Indies, were selected for the starting XI. In 2022, Khawaja had a successful return to the competition and excelled for his team. The team’s star performer in 2022, when they overcame England, was Brathwaite. He ended the year with a fantastic average of 62.45 and 687 runs scored from 14 innings.
Marnus Labuschagne, one of the best top-order hitters in the modern era, completed 2022 with 957 runs at an average of 56.29. In his 19 innings of play, the 28-year-old also recorded three centuries and a double century. Babar Azam has been one of Pakistan’s most reliable players, despite the team’s struggles to succeed in Test cricket. He amassed 1184 runs at an average of 69.94 and four centuries by the end of the year.
Despite the setback, Jonny Bairstow of England had some standout performances in 2022. In the ten games he played before being forced to withdraw from the team due to a fractured leg, Bairstow scored six hundred and gave some of his best Test performances. England accomplished their highest-ever successful fourth-innings chase thanks to his 269-run partnership with Joe Root, where he batted 114* against India, scoring 378/3 at a rate of almost five runs per over.
Ben Stokes was able to make an impression with both the ball and the bat. Under his direction, test cricket in England saw a significant shift, and as a result, he was appropriately chosen as the captain by the ICC. Rishabh Pant established himself as a strong Test cricketer, scoring 680 runs in 12 innings at an average of 61.81. He performed just as well while wearing the gloves.
Pat Cummins of Australia, Kagiso Rabada of South Africa, Nathan Lyon of Australia, and James Anderson of England round up the ICC’s Test XI of the Year. When playing Pakistan in Lahore last year, Cummins stole the show, but Rabada had an incredible year with the ball, taking 47 wickets in just nine games.
