Former U19 Captain: Kiran Powar, the former captain of the Indian U-19 squad, has been expelled from the Mumbai Cricket Association Council and has been prohibited from playing cricket for a year. Deepan Mistry filed a complaint against him, accusing Powar of having numerous conflicts of interest.
Powar was said to be a coach at Goregaon Sports Club despite being a member of the Apex Council of the Mumbai Cricket Association. When his brother was hired to coach the Mumbai Senior Men’s Cricket team, the Ethics Officer discovered that Powar was guilty.
Powar was prohibited by the officer from participating in Mumbai Cricket Association in the aftermath of the incident, which didn’t sit well with the 46-year-old. In the Bombay High Court, Powar’s attorney Sneha Phene contended that the cricketer was not required to divulge any of the information and that there was no conflict of interest on his behalf.
Now, in accordance with the guidelines established by the Mumbai Cricket Association, the Cricket Improvement Committee strictly determined the appointment of any personnel, including the head coach and any support staff. Phene asserted that the petitioner had no involvement in the aforementioned case as a result.
Phene took a dig at Ethics Officer
According to News18, Phene also made fun of the Ethics officer and cited Constitutional Rule Number 39, which states that the Association may only designate an Ethics officer during an Annual General Meeting (AGM). However, since the Ethics Officer wasn’t appointed during the meeting this time, his directive shouldn’t be taken seriously.
Powar was corrected by MCA attorney A.S. Khandeparkar, who said it wasn’t necessary to hire the Ethics officer only at the AGM meeting.
Additionally, since the Apex Council must receive the CIC’s recommendation, a member of the Apex Council would have a voice in selection decisions. The High Court Judge stated that given the aforementioned facts, it cannot be argued that this court’s intervention in the Ethics Officer/Ombudsman’s decision is perverse.
