POTM Award: Richa Ghosh, India’s wicketkeeper-batter, is the lone Indian among nine players shortlisted for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 ‘Player of the Tournament award.
India was eliminated from the event after failing to defeat Australia in the first semi-final on Thursday, February 23. The Women in Blue came within five runs of upsetting the five-time champions in the quarterfinal game but ultimately fell short by five runs.
Ghosh finished the tournament as India’s second-highest run-scorer, with 136 runs in five innings at an average of 68 and a strike rate of 130.76. Throughout the event, Richa excelled as a finisher. She made some key runs against Pakistan and the West Indies to assist India to reach their goals in both games.
In a loss to England, the 19-year-old also produced a brilliant 34-ball 47*. The West Bengal-born hitter was also effective behind the wickets and exhibited outstanding efforts to dismiss England opener Danni Wyatt in India’s third-group encounter.
Australian players dominate the ICC’s list of players shortlisted, with three players making the cut. England and South Africa each have two players on the list, while India and the West Indies each have one.
The three Australians who made the list were skipper Meg Lanning, who scored 139 runs till the tournament’s semi-final game at an average of 69.50, wicket-keeper batter Alyssa Healy (171 runs, average of 57), and all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner (81 runs and nine wickets).
Five players from each of the two finalist teams make the cut.
Nat Sciver-Brunt, the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 216 runs at an average of 72, and spinner Sophie Ecclestone, who finished with 11 wickets at a great economy of 4.15, were the two English players to make the list.
The two South Africans were opener Tazmin Brits, whose brilliance with the bat and fielding skills gave the hosts a decisive semi-final victory, and Laura Wolvaardt, who played a key role in advancing her team to the final as the second-highest run-scorer for the Proteas.
On Friday, February 24, the British scored 68 from 55 balls versus England in the semi-final. She’s also the tournament’s second-highest run scorer, with 176 runs at an average of 44.
West Indies captain Hayley Matthews was named to the list for her outstanding all-round performance in which she scored 130 runs and took four wickets.
