WI: Former West Indies player Joel Garner has expressed his feelings on the upheaval in West Indian cricket following the loss to Scotland in the upcoming ODI World Cup Qualifiers. Notably, the Windies will not compete in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India due to their poor performance in the Qualifiers.
The West Indies have reached the lowest point in their cricketing history after a seven-wicket defeat to Scotland, since they can no longer qualify for the premier tournament in India. Former Windies cricketer Joel Garner, who won the World Cup in 1979 under the legendary Clive Llyod, opened out in an interview about the present state of the national team and revealed the cause for the Caribbean squad’s demise.
“We’re not who we used to be! Playing for the West Indies used to be a source of great pride. It was our driving force. Young players are becoming increasingly interested in T20 competitions. “There’s no blame on them because everyone is looking for security,” Garner was quoted as saying by NDTV.
“Our generation also did not receive a lot of money; it came primarily from County cricket. However, this generation of cricketers today has numerous options for earning money, and they cannot be faulted for making use of them. The pride of representing the West Indies must be restored,” he continued.
It doesn’t hurt that our standards have sunk: Gordon Greenidge
Gordon Greenidge, perhaps one of the best hitters produced by West Indies cricket, was also interviewed and made a fairly blunt assessment about the Men in Maroon’s recent performances.
“See! I don’t watch a lot of cricket these days, especially white-ball cricket. A West Indies defeat used to sting a lot, but it no longer does since our standards have dropped over the years. However, a World Cup without the West Indies is unthinkable. We don’t have any more depth to hit,” Greenidge observed.
