IPL History: In Match 43 of IPL 2023 against Royal Challengers Bangalore, veteran wrist spinner Amit Mishra eclipsed Lasith Malinga’s total of 170 wickets, moving him up to third place in the list of all-time wicket-takers in IPL history.
Mishra returned to the attack in the fifteenth over of the first innings of the match between the Lucknow Super Giants and the RCB after delivering the seventh over of the first innings. On the third ball of the over, the 40-year-old removed Suyash Prabhudesai, getting him holed out at long-off to capture the 171st scalp of his IPL career, knocking Malinga down to the third place.
With the prized scalp of RCB skipper Faf du Plessis in the 17th over of the innings, Mishra increased his total to 172. The wristspinner assisted LSG in limiting RCB to 126/9 in their stipulated 20 overs by finishing with figures of 2/21 in his three-over performance.
Mishra has played 160 games in his 15-year IPL career, taking 172 wickets at an average of 23.75, with an economy rate of 7.34, and one five-wicket haul. Having accomplished the feat three times during his remarkable career in the editions 2008, 2011, and 2013, respectively, Mishra also owns the record for the most hat tricks taken in the history of the IPL.
Notably, Dwayne Bravo holds the record for taking the most wickets in IPL history with 183 from 161 games. Yuzvendra Chahal follows closely behind him in second place with 178 from 148 games.
To win, the Lucknow Super Giants need 127 runs.
Resuming the LSG vs. RCB match, the RCB skipper Faf du Plessis won the toss and decided to bat first in Lucknow on a sluggish surface. Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis, the renowned opening pair, got off to a cautious start, putting up 62 runs in 53 balls before Kohli was removed by Ravi Bishnoi with the final ball of the ninth over.
The dryness of the pitch was too much for any batter to handle, and the LSG bowlers had a field day, taking as many as 9 wickets. As RCB was only able to reach 126/9 in their allotted 20 overs, Naveen-ul-Haq (3/30), Ravi Bishnoi (2/21), Krishnappa Gowtham (1/10, 2 overs), and Mishra all contributed to wickets. The top scorer for his team was captain du Plessis, who scored 44 points off of 40 balls.
